Wildly Curious Homeschool Meetup
Wildly Curious is a free weekly homeschool meetup for kids age 6 to 9 and their caregiver(s).
Each week we will connect with a specific nature topic through read alouds, discussion, and an art project. Then we enjoy an hour of free play and socialization in nature.
We hope to cultivate a consistent group of kids who attend regularly. We can’t wait to see you at one of the next Wildly Curious meetups!
The Important Details
-
This meetup is intended for kids age 6-9ish. An adult must attend and supervise their child during the meetup.
(If you would need to bring a younger sibling in order for you to attend, please email us to discuss prior to attending.) -
We meet at a small rotation of outdoor locations in/around Durham to give the kids a variety of enviornments to explore and play in. Occasionally we will have some special locations to match particular nature topics. Our meetup starts at 10:30am and wraps up at 12:00pm, after which some people choose to stay for an additional BYO picnic lunch/extra play hour. Exact location information is included in your registration confirmation email and monthly reminder emails.
-
The Wildly Curious group leader is Kelly, founder of Parenting Off The Beaten Path. She is an avid camper, outdoor enthusiast, homeschool teacher, and mom to a neurodivergent six year old.
-
We will spend the first half hour reading and discussing a few picture books then collaborating on an art activity/interactive project. The final hour will be dedicated to socializing and free play in nature.
Plant and critter investigation, creek wading, tree climbing, rock scrambling, and pretend play are all encouraged. -
Kids should leave electronics and valued items at home. The group leader will bring the books and art supplies needed for the meetup and wiill occasionally bring things like field guides, nets, or other nature-exploration tools. An occasional special request for specific items may be made in the monthly email.
Please bring any items you and your child need to stay comfortable outside for the meetup including things like a picnic blanket, snacks/water bottles, bugspray/sunscreen, appropriate outerwear, change of clothes, etc. -
When you register for Between the Trees you will receive an email with all of the group details and the dates of the next several meetups. We will send a monthly reminder email as well!
You don’t have to attend every meetup to be part of the group, but we hope to have a crew of regular attendees.
This is not your typical “nature story time” type event - we want kids to actively participate in discussion during the book reading in whatever ways they are comfortable - sharing what they already know, asking questions, and thinking up creative ideas!
We created this group to meet the desire for an outdoor, nature-based meetup for kids who feel too old for the many preschool-age gatherings. As such, we do try to limit the number of toddlers and preschoolers. If you would need to bring a younger sibling in order for your older child to attend, please email us.
